What I'm Wearing and What I'm Doing

Saturday: What I'm wearing?

I specifically picked out this outfit because I knew I needed to make this post. I chose to wear the hat that I "borrowed" (permanently) from Captain. I rarely wear hats, so this is the only one that I wear. Since I had dirty hair, it was a perfect day to wear a hat.

Sunday: My favorite thing to do on a Sunday?

This one is an easy post to make. My favorite thing to do on a Sunday is go to church and read about God. I like the people in my church, and I enjoy having specific time dedicated to talking about God. Today's sermon was from Psalm 145 about how great God is. It showed me that I need to let my actions always be a form of praise to God because he is worthy of praise all of the time.

Smiles Abound

I think some of my other Twenty Somethings are trying to stay caught up with their schoolwork and work life. I'm sure they'll get caught up on their pictures though in the near future. For now, let me show you a smile! Or a few smiles I should say.

Thanks to Captain for sharing this picture with me.

Yesterday was graduation at the college, and I was very excited to help some of my friends celebrate. Captain and I took this picture after graduation where smiles were aplenty. Congratulations to all of the graduates and to all of the Twenty Somethings who graduated two years and one year ago respectively.

Cheers!

Captain's Party

Saturday we celebrated Captain Something Fun's birthday with a Captain America themed party. I'm just going to leave a few photos here for our avid followers. Thanks to The Farmer's Daughter for taking beautiful photos and sharing them with us.

We had a photo booth, played games, danced to some old dances, drank coffee/tea, and ate way too much. It was fun party.

Waiting on the photographer to adjust the settings. We were all kind of in our own world.

We were fighting against the wind and the intermittent sun.

Sunshine attacks and disorganized.

Someone missed the pretty smiles memo.

Oh finally, a decent photo where we all are smiling.

The Cake and Candles

Gotta get all 24 (er 25) of those candles.

Third Day and Brandon Heath

Last night I knew someone personally on the stage at the Third Day/Brandon Heath concert in Richmond. My brother's girlfriend, Olivia, was invited to sing as part of the choir for Third Day. It was rather cool. In exchange for her voice, she received two free tickets, and she chose me! I took Captain with me. After some minor disappointments about not being seated together, it was a good concert. The venue was comfortable and the sound wasn't too obnoxious. These two bands perform some wonderful songs. I'll leave a couple here after some of my pictures.

The one thing I did which I highly regret is that I was not fully present for the concert. I very quickly got caught up in taking pictures and videos instead of enjoying the music, the words of the artists, and the experience.

A Weekend of Love

Who says Valentine's Day is only for couples? This year, I took the servant approach to celebrate this day of love.

On Saturday evening, my church hosted a Valentine's dinner for the adults in the congregation complete with catered food and fun games. I and four other single gals, including Captain Something Fun, watched the children while their parents participated in the dinner. We had seven children from two families ranging from seven months to ten years old. The children were served Little Caesar's pizza, which I've discovered children prefer over any other kind of pizza. The rest of the evening was a mixture of games, coloring, singing, and cuddling. Captain truly shined by teaching the kids some fun games and leading us in silly songs. I rather enjoyed playing with the seven-month-old, who was full of smiles.

The special project of the evening was decorating cookies. It was funny because I went in one room and mixed the icing while the other three gals kept the kids in a separate room. Apparently I wasn't fast enough because children kept trying to break in and see what I was concocting. Before I brought in the icing, I tried to lay down some ground rules. On the cuff, the ones I came up with included asking when you wanted to switch icing colors and waiting your turn. I felt smart for laying down those rules. The one I forgot was to not lick the knife and put it back in the bowl. That rule quickly got established.

One child declared that this icing was the best he had ever had. Funnily enough it was basic Pillsbury icing from Wal-Mart. I think the colors tricked him into thinking it was special.

I decorated the blue one. A three-year-old decorated the other broken bits. He immediately broke all of his cookies before decorating them. I guess hearts weren't his thing.

Most of the cookies were consumed before any pictures were taken, and I was definitely glad we waited until later in the evening to dispense the sugar. One parent took one look at his daughter and laughingly declared that she had consumed too much sugar, but he was appreciative that there was childcare so he and his wife could have a child-free evening together.

Another special moment for me was when I read a book to the older girl in the group. She chose a book of Bible verses, but told me I didn't have to read the verse addresses. Even though the reading only lasted a few pages, it was sweet to have her cuddled up next to me listening to me read.

Here's what happens when the icing colors all got combined.
On Sunday, actual Valentine's Day, I was greeted at church with a beautiful long-stemmed yellow rose by a friend. It is one of those special varieties that don't require water and last forever. After church, I drove to Richmond to watch a play with my brother's girlfriend. She teaches high school choir and some of her students were performing in a community theater production of various love songs from Broadway. Some songs were very well done and some reminded me that this was a community theater full of youth. During the first act, I kept waiting for something familiar from Phantom, RENT, Grease, or the like. Finally, I was rewarded with a song from Phantom of the Opera, even if it wasn't performed with as much emotion as the original. I got nervous at the end when I saw several people line up on the stage that they would try to close with Seasons of Love from RENT. It just seemed too cheesy to close with that. Thankfully that wasn't the case. Overall it was a good show.
After a scary drive home from Richmond in the snow, I stayed home and enjoyed a couple of cookies to finish out my Valentine's evening.

No secret admirers. No special valentines notes. It was still a good weekend.

Finishing up the Challenge and the Year

Day 29:

I had to wait until I had a photographer to get the full effect of this picture. Here is my newest blanket scarf.

Ha! It's actually an afghan that my Grady gave me for Christmas. I really like it. The colors are gorgeous and it keeps me warm and cozy in my chair.

Day 30:

I thought about combining these posts since I just posted a photo of myself, but then I realized there's another aspect of my life I wanted to share. I brought all my friends books back from my mom's house which meant I had to buy a bookshelf. After perusing all of the discount stores in Richmond, I settled for a Walmart shelf because it would fit into my car and my budget. So here I am contemplatively looking at my books. Fair warning, I have more books in my apartment than this. I was an English major.

Day 31:

How is it already the last day of the year?! And this challenge is almost finished. We all did pretty well. I'm proud that we all made it through the challenge (I'm giving the benefit of the doubt that you will all finish). The challenge actually says to reflect on 2013, so I did. It was fun to look back at what was only two years ago.

In 2013, Martha S. got married to Marvel's Dad (well it was before Marvel, the dog was in the picture, but it's a good psuedonym for her husband). Unfortunately Captain couldn't be at this event because she had just gotten a new job. I'm sure the picture would have been more fun with her help as well. Wasn't it cool that I happened to wear Martha's other wedding color to go well with the two bridesmaids (Miss Ellaneous and Farmer's Daughter). It was such a nice wedding. Of course I only had one real-life wedding and movie weddings to compare it to.

I also spent the summer of 2013 in England. This photo is from a trip to Dublin that some of took one weekend. It was jam-packed and included a crazy chance meeting with one of the travel buddies old elementary school friend who had moved to Ireland. In this picture we had just decided to use our bus passes to ride until we felt like getting off. We ended up in a park.

Now for a picture of 2015 to really reflect.

In January, I was housesitting and there was a kitty. In February, I hosted an Un-birthday party which turned into a sleepover. In March, I walked to Sonic. In April, I moved to Union City. In May, I met a sloth. In June, I moved into my own apartment. In July, I learned to be a super VISTA. In August, I and some other lovely ladies welcomed the freshmen. In September, we went to First Friday and had Ale8. In October, I hiked the Pinnacle on Mountain Day with my co-workers and Gunner. In November, the freshmen bonners gave me cookies and nice words. In December, I saw a friend graduate; it seems that all of my friends are slowly graduating college.

Well that's all for this year. Until next year.

Cheers!

Day 26: a quote

Picking a favorite quote would be difficult. The same goes for a Bible verse. I'm going to go with a quote I've read recently and enjoyed.

It came from a journal Captain gave me for Christmas. I'm using it as a gratitude journal. Every day I write a letter to God thanking him for all of things he's given me that day.

The quote is:
"Oh, if we did but love others! How easily the least thing, the shutting of a door gently, the walking softly...or the choice of a seat, so as to leave the most convenient to others, might become occasions of its exercise." -Mére Angélique Arnauld

This quote came at a time when I was getting easily annoyed. It gave me a moment to reflect. I don't try to write about the quotes, but I appreciate when they apply.
